Remember to water your "evergreen" trees, shrubs, and groundcovers regularly throughout the Fall season if possible until the ground is frozen.
The best time to prune your "fruit" trees (Apple, Cherry, Crabapple, Hawthorn, Mountain Ash, Plum, etc.) is after dormancy until bud swelling in the Spring. The ideal period for "fruit" tree trimming in Laurel and Billings is usually from November through early April depending on the weather.
All of your outdoor woody plants can benefit immensely from a nice 2" layer of organic mulch applied around their root crowns without contacting the trunk or canes, especially those which are young or newly planted. While there are multiple benefits from using mulch, the roots of your plants will retain moisture and be better insulated from extreme temperature fluctuations during the Fall season.
It's important to avoid any damage to tree trunks and shrub canes as this can cause stress to the plant and create an entry point for insects and diseases, as well as disrupt their vascular system possibly leading to death. Of particular concern during the Fall and Winter seasons are wildlife damage, sunscald, and frost cracks. It is helpful to use a light colored wrap and / or a physical barrier around the trunk for younger plants or those with thin bark during this time of year.
When using your trees and shrubs to display holiday lights and ornaments, try to avoid injury to both yourself and the plant. It is not recommended to use fasteners which will penetrate your tree's vascular system (just inside the bark) creating an entry point for insects and diseases. Also, if light wires are left in tree crowns all year, they can cause injury and eventually girdle your limbs.
Have a wonderful holiday season and keep warm with plenty of good cheer.
