Excess snow or ice accumulation on the foliage of evergreen trees and shrubs (Spruce, Pine, Juniper, etc.) may snap limbs and leave an undesirable hole in your plant. Reducing the load on these limbs may be beneficial in such a case, especially with the added threat of strong winds.
When using salt based products to melt ice around your property, it's possible some leaching into the soil may occur and consequently reach feeder roots causing harm to plants.
Accumulations of loose leaf / needle / twig debris left under shrub and tree canopies during the winter can harbor unwanted insects which may infest your plants the following spring. Using a uniform layer of organic mulch under your plants such as wood chips is a better option.
